Meet the Mootoo family at Moka situated in the Centre of the island. Their ancestors came to Mauritius in the 1890’s from the State of Tamil Nadu in India (actual Chennai). They settled in Moka in 1905 and jealously preserved all the original family cooking recipes until this day. You will be provided with a list of ingredients you will need to buy; fresh vegetables and spices. The use of spices such as saffron, cinnamon, cardamom and cloves are what gives Indian dishes their subtle flavour. Immigrants came from different parts of India and brought with them a great many ways of cooking rice and chapatis (flat breads); dry grains and pickles are also used extensively in Indian cuisine. It is an opportunity to discover how the local people live in extended families to keep the bonding and family traditions throughout centuries.
